MCP notes/limitations
What to know before you rely on the MCP Connector, including what data it can reach and the current beta limits.
The MCP Connector is a new, early-access feature. It is a great way to bring your reporting into an AI conversation, and there are a few things to know about what it can and cannot do today.
What data is available
- Dashboard data only. Only the data that already exists in your DashThis dashboards is available through MCP. The connector reads the values that are on your dashboards. It does not reach back into your connected platforms for anything that is not already in a widget.
- Current values, by period. The connector returns the current values of your widgets for a reporting period you choose, and it can compare against the previous period or the previous year.
- Your written commentary. A comment widget’s text comes back alongside the numbers, so your assistant can build on the recap you already wrote instead of starting from a blank page. On a dashboard that files commentary per period, your assistant is also told which period end date the text was written for, so it will not relay an earlier period’s note as this one’s.
Read-only
The current MCP implementation is read-only. The connected AI assistant can view your dashboards and their values, but it cannot create, edit, or delete anything in DashThis. Your dashboards and data are never changed.
Current limitations
- Widgets that carry no readable metric. Most widgets return their values through MCP. A few still do not, because there is no metric value for the connector to read: headings, and widgets whose display format shows no metric. Your assistant is told when a widget cannot be read and why, so it will not report that widget as empty. Nothing changes in your dashboard, which displays normally.
- Periods. If you do not name a period, your assistant reads the dashboard’s own reporting period, so the numbers reconcile with what you see in DashThis. You can also ask for a preset date range such as last 7 days, last 30 days, this month, last month, this year, or last year. Naming a fully custom date range yourself is not supported yet. Your assistant is always told which window answered, so ask it to state the period alongside the numbers.
- Usage limits. To keep the connector fast for everyone, there are fair-use limits on how often and how much it reads at once.
- Staying connected. Your connection lasts one hour at a time and refreshes automatically while you keep using the assistant. If you do not use it for 14 days, you will be asked to sign in and approve access again.
- Very large dashboards. Your assistant reads a dashboard a batch of widgets at a time, so a dashboard with many widgets is read over a few automatic requests behind the scenes. Very long widget tables may be shortened, so a big table might not show every row. You still get one combined answer.
