How to connect with MCP in ChatGPT
Connect ChatGPT to your DashThis account with MCP so you can ask about your dashboards without leaving the chat.
Making changes with the custom connector
Right now, write actions (like creating a dashboard or adding data) are not available when you connect DashThis to ChatGPT with a custom MCP connector. You can work around this by creating a custom plugin instead. Contact us if you want to set this up, and we'll help you.
This guide shows you how to connect ChatGPT to your DashThis account using the MCP Connector. Once connected, you can ask ChatGPT about your dashboards and it answers using your live reporting data.
Before you start
- The connector must be set up through the ChatGPT web app.
- Adding a custom connector requires a ChatGPT plan that includes connector support.
- You sign in with your usual DashThis credentials during setup.
If you’re using a Team/Business or Enterprise workspace, an admin may need to enable the plugin before it can be used. This depends on your workspace settings.
Connect ChatGPT to DashThis
- Go to https://chatgpt.com/plugins/... and click Install Plugin.
-
Sign in with your DashThis credentials and allow access.
-
Start asking about your dashboards, for example “List my DashThis dashboards” or “What were my clicks last month on the Google Ads dashboard?”
What ChatGPT can see
ChatGPT only sees the DashThis account you connected. It reads your dashboards, and it changes something only when you ask, like writing a comment. It changes or removes something only when you ask, and it checks with you before removing a widget, because a removal can’t be undone. For the full list of what the connector can and cannot do, see MCP notes and limitations.
ChatGPT says not all permissions were granted
If ChatGPT tells you that not all requested permissions were granted, or the DashThis tools never appear in your conversation, the connection was approved with incomplete permissions.
Delete the DashThis plugin in ChatGPT, then follow the steps above to create it and approve access again. Your dashboards and your data are never affected, so you lose nothing by reconnecting.
ChatGPT connects to the wrong DashThis account
ChatGPT only sees the dashboards on the DashThis account you signed in with when you approved access. To connect a different DashThis account, delete the DashThis plugin in ChatGPT, then follow the steps above and sign in with the DashThis login of the account you want. Your dashboards and your data are never affected, so you lose nothing by reconnecting.
ChatGPT can read your dashboards but cannot change them
If ChatGPT answers questions about your dashboards but a change fails (for example, it says the request is forbidden or asks you to authorize again), your connection was approved before DashThis could make changes. Delete the DashThis plugin in ChatGPT, then follow the steps above to install it again and approve “Create and change dashboards & data”. You don’t need to sign out of DashThis, and your dashboards and data are not affected.
