DashThis MCP Connector: How It Works and What You Need to Know
The MCP Connector links your AI assistant to your DashThis account, so you can ask about your dashboards in plain language and get answers based on your real reporting data.
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants connect securely to outside tools and data. The DashThis MCP Connector uses it to give an assistant like Claude or ChatGPT a direct, secure connection to your DashThis dashboards.
What the MCP Connector does
Once connected, your AI assistant can look at the dashboards in your DashThis account and answer questions about them. You stay in your assistant, and it pulls the numbers straight from your reports.
- Finds your dashboards. The assistant can list the dashboards in your account and tell them apart by name, group, and data source.
- Reads current values. It can pull the current values of the widgets on a dashboard. Unless you name a period, it reads the dashboard's own reporting period, and each widget that has a period of its own at that period, so its numbers match what you see in DashThis.. You can also ask for another period, such as the last 30 days or last month.
- Exports a dashboard as a PDF. It can turn a dashboard into a PDF and give you a link to it, so you can hand your client the report itself. The link works for one hour, and the PDF covers the dashboard's own reporting period.
- Reading and exporting leave your dashboards as they are. Turning a dashboard into a PDF creates a file. It does not change the dashboard.
- Edits your dashboards. It can rename a dashboard, change its theme or data sources, and change, move, add or remove widgets. It tells you what will change and asks before it saves. Removing a widget is permanent, and the connector never deletes a dashboard or a data source.
- Writes your commentary. It can put the recap you agreed on into a comment box on your dashboard, for one of its periods. It asks before it replaces a comment that is already there.
- Creates dashboards. It can lay out a new dashboard from what you ask for, show it to you as a proposal, and create it once you approve. It can also add one of your data sources to a dashboard.
- Confirms the connection. It can check which DashThis account it is connected to before it answers.
How does it work?
- Connect your AI assistant to DashThis once, using your normal DashThis login. The connection is secured with OAuth, so you never paste an API key or password into the assistant.
- Ask a question about your reporting, for example “Which of my dashboards have a source error?” or “What were my sessions last month on the SEO dashboard?”
- Get an answer built from the live values on your dashboards.
It changes only what you ask for
The MCP Connector reads your dashboards, and it makes a change only when you ask for one, like writing a comment. It removes a widget only when you name it, it never deletes a dashboard or your data, and it only ever sees the account you connected.
To let it write, approve "Create and change dashboards & data" when you connect. If you connected before comments were available, disconnect DashThis in your assistant and connect again.
Which AI assistants can I use?
The MCP Connector works with AI assistants that support the Model Context Protocol, including Claude and ChatGPT. Follow the step-by-step guides:

Where do I see my connection in DashThis?
Open MCP in the left menu of DashThis, right below Dashboards. The page shows each AI assistant you connected with your DashThis login, and when it was last active. If a connection has expired, the page tells you, and you can connect again from there.
The page also gives you example questions to try, links to the setup guides, and a box to tell the MCP team what the connector should do next.
