How to add a skill to Claude or ChatGPT
Learn what an AI skill is, why it saves you time, and how to upload a skill file to Claude or ChatGPT, even on a personal ChatGPT plan.
What is a skill?
A skill is a small package of instructions that teaches your AI assistant how to do a specific task. You add it once, and your assistant uses it whenever that task comes up.
Why use a skill?
- Save time. You don’t need to paste the same long prompt into every conversation.
- Get consistent results. Your assistant follows the same steps every time.
- Share the know-how. Everyone on your team can add the same skill and get the same results.
Before you start
Download the skill file. It comes as a .zip file. Keep it zipped: Claude and ChatGPT both upload the .zip as is.
Add a skill in Claude
- Open Settings, then Customize, then Skills.
- Click the + button, then Create skill.
- Select Upload a skill.
- Choose the .zip file you downloaded.
Add a skill in ChatGPT
ChatGPT offers skills on Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare plans only. On a personal plan, follow the next section instead.
- Open the sidebar and click Plugins.
- Go to the Plugin Directory, then Skills.
- Click Create, then Upload from your computer.
- Choose the .zip file you downloaded.
On a personal ChatGPT plan?
You can still use the skill without uploading it.
- Unzip the file you downloaded.
- Open the instructions file inside it.
- Copy its content and paste it into your chat.
You get the same result, but you need to paste the instructions again in each new chat.
