How to automatically send dashboards to Slack
DashThis can post any dashboard to a Slack channel on a recurring schedule by sending your automated email report to the channel's own email address.
How does sending a dashboard to Slack work?
DashThis does not have a dedicated Slack button, but you do not need one. You can combine two features you already have:
- DashThis side: your dashboard can be emailed automatically on a recurring schedule.
- Slack side: every Slack channel has its own email address, and any message sent to it is posted in the channel.
Point your scheduled DashThis email at that channel address, and your dashboard lands in Slack on its own, as often as you choose.
How do you get your Slack channel's email address?
Each Slack channel can generate a unique email address that turns incoming emails into channel posts. Grab that address from Slack first, then keep it handy for the DashThis setup below.
Slack owns this part of the setup, so follow their official steps here: Send emails to Slack. Using their guide means these instructions stay accurate even if Slack updates its interface.
How do you schedule the dashboard email in DashThis?
Once you have the Slack channel email address, set up a recurring send from the dashboard itself:
- Open the dashboard you want to send to Slack.
- Click the sharing icon to the right of the dashboard period to open the sharing options.
- Select the Share by email + automation option.
- Paste your Slack channel email address in the To field.
- Set the Frequency to how often you want the dashboard delivered, or keep it as a one-time send.
- Add an optional note if you want a short message to appear with the report.
- Click Send to save the automation.
From now on, DashThis posts the dashboard to your Slack channel on the schedule you picked. 🎉
How do you edit or stop the automation?
- Open the Email Sharing section in the dashboard menu.
- Click the pencil icon next to the dashboard to change the recipients or the note.
- Save your changes.
Good to know
- Sender address: your report arrives from notifications@dashthis.com by default, which you can customize with a custom domain.
- Multiple destinations: you can add your Slack channel address alongside regular email recipients in the same To field.
- Slack access: the email-to-channel feature is controlled by Slack, so a Slack admin may need to enable it for your workspace.
