How to add a Custom Data Source from any platform with your AI assistant
Your AI assistant can turn numbers from a platform DashThis does not connect to into a data source you can report on in your dashboards.
The right permission. Your assistant needs Create and change dashboards & data, which you approve when you connect. If you connected before this was available, your assistant gets an error when it tries to save data, and nothing asks you to approve again. Disconnect DashThis in your assistant, then connect it again and approve the new permission.
When to use this
Use this if you've ever thought:
- "DashThis doesn't connect to my platform."
- "I can't find the metric I need in DashThis."
- "I want my AI Overviews or AI Mode data from Google Search Console in my dashboard." (This data isn't available through Google's API yet.)
- "I only have a CSV, an Excel file, or a screenshot of my numbers."
- "My data comes from another tool I use with Claude or ChatGPT."
If that sounds like you, you can still add this data to your dashboard. Here's how.
How does it work?
- Give your assistant the numbers, from that platform's own connector, a screenshot, or a file you have open.
- Name the platform and the client, for example GoHighLevel and Acme Corp. Together they become the name of the data source.
- Check how DashThis reads each column. Your assistant shows you the date column, the metrics and the dimensions, and whether each metric is summed or averaged. Nothing is saved yet.
- Confirm the reading. Your assistant saves the numbers as a new data source in your account.
- Add the data source to a dashboard. Your assistant can put it on a dashboard and build the widgets for you. You can also build or adjust them yourself in DashThis.
Not sure what to ask? DashThis gives you a ready-made prompt:
- When you create a dashboard, search for your platform or scroll to the end of the list of integrations, then click Can't find your data source? You'll also find it at the bottom of your integrations page.
- Click Copy the prompt and paste it in your AI assistant. If your assistant isn't connected to DashThis yet, click Connect your AI first.
- Answer its questions. Once you confirm, it saves your numbers and adds a few widgets to your dashboard.
How do you add more data later?
Send new numbers to the same data source, under the same name. New periods are added, and a period you send again replaces its old numbers, so nothing is counted twice.
Good to know
- Your table needs dates, or a period. Include one date column and at least one number column, with the column names on the first line. For totals with no dates, such as a screenshot, tell your assistant which period they cover.
- Each data source counts toward your plan. A new data source uses one of the sources your plan allows. When you reach your limit, you can still add numbers to a data source you already have.
- A data source has a size limit. One data source holds about 200,000 values, so a long daily history may need monthly totals instead.
- Up to 30 columns at a time. Your assistant sends up to 30 columns and 500 rows at a time. For a bigger table, it sends the data in several parts.
- Keep the same time unit. New rows must cover the same length of time as the rows already saved, for example all days or all months.
- Keep the same columns. New numbers must include every column the data source already has. You can add new number columns, but not a new column that breaks the data down. A period that overlaps one already saved, without matching it exactly, is refused.
- Renaming and removing columns. Your assistant can rename a data source or stop reporting on a column, and the saved values are kept. The date column and dimension columns cannot be removed, and a widget built on a removed column stops showing data.
- Deleting rows. Your assistant cannot delete rows. Contact our Support Team if you need rows removed. To delete a whole data source, remove it from Connected Integrations in DashThis.
