Comment box – How it works

The comment box widget in DashThis allows you to easily add contextual information, insights, and notes directly into your dashboard. This article explains how the comment box saves your content, how autosave works, and what happens if something goes wrong during saving

 

You can’t add HTML in a comment box.

 
 

🔄 Autosave Functionality

To ensure your work is protected, the comment box now includes a built-in automatic save (autosave) system. There isn't a manual 'Save' button anymore. 

How autosave works:

  • Autosave occurs every 10 seconds.

  • Autosave begins as soon as editing mode is activated.

  • A final save is attempted the moment you finish editing (when you click outside the box or close editing).

  • DashThis saves your Comment Box only if the content has changed.



 

⚠️ What Happens if Saving Fails?

Sometimes, network issues or temporary errors may prevent the comment box from saving. Here’s how DashThis handles those situations.

While editing:

  • If a save error occurs, a warning message will be displayed directly inside the comment box.

After editing is finished:

  • If the widget couldn’t save your content, DashThis will keep trying to save in the background.

  • Once the save is successful:

    • A toast notification will appear to confirm the save.

    • The warning message disappears from the widget.

 

 

🚪 Leaving the Dashboard with Unsaved Changes

If at least one comment box still has unsaved content:

  • Your browser will display a message warning that you have unsaved changes.

  • You will be asked to confirm whether you really want to leave the page.

If you choose to leave:

  • The unsaved comment box content will not be saved.

  • All unsaved modifications will be lost.

 

🧩 Comments in Templates and Cloned Dashboards

Comment box content is not kept when creating a template or when cloning a dashboard. The text inside the comment box is not transferred; only the widget structure is copied. This ensures that comments containing outdated or client-specific information are not unintentionally reused.
