AI Insights: How It Works (Free & Pro)

DashThis’ AI Insights provides intelligent, automated commentary based on your dashboard data. Instead of only presenting metrics, AI Insights helps you understand what the data means so you can communicate insights clearly, identify opportunities, and demonstrate value more effectively. This guide explains how AI Insights works, the difference between the Free and Pro versions, and how to use each feature inside your dashboards.

With one click, AI Insights analyzes your dashboard through four essential marketing lenses:

1. Summary Insights

Provides a high-level overview of your performance, including:

  • Key trends

  • Notable increases or decreases

  • Overall commentary on your marketing efforts

2. Opportunities

Actionable recommendations based on your dashboard data, helping you identify what to optimize next.

3. Winners & Losers

Compares performance across campaigns, channels, or metrics to identify:

  • Top performers

  • Underperforming elements requiring attention

4. Early Signals

Shows emerging patterns or subtle shifts in performance, helping you notice trends before they become significant.

How to Use AI Insights (Free Version)

1. Access AI Insights

  1. Log in to your DashThis account.

  2. Open one of your dashboards.

  3. Click the AI Insights icon located in the dashboard header.

2. Select the Type of Insights You Want

Choose the type of insights you'd like to generate:

  • Summary

  • Opportunities

  • Winners & Losers

  • Early Signals

Once generated, you can copy the insights and paste them into the Comment Box or your external reports.

How to Use AI Insights Pro

AI Insights Pro includes two advanced modes designed to help you explore your data more deeply: Chat Mode and Dashboard Context Mode.

1.
Chat Mode

Chat Mode allows you to ask questions about your data using natural language. You can explore trends, diagnose performance issues, or compare campaigns on the fly.

Examples of what you can ask:

  • “What caused the drop in conversions this month?”

  • “Which channel contributed the most to revenue growth?”

  • “What should I focus on to improve Facebook campaign performance?”

  • “Compare campaign A and campaign B for efficiency.”

Common Use Cases for Chat Mode:

  • Dig Deeper: "You mentioned a drop in conversions. Can you tell me which campaign performed the worst?"
  • Specific Comparisons: "How does my performance from this month compare to our Black Friday sale last year?"
  • Focused Analysis: "Our main competitor launched a new product in June. How did our ad performance change after this month?"
  • Agency Reporting: "My client for this dashboard is in the e-commerce industry. Can you summarize the key performance highlights I should share with them?"
  • Get Actionable Advice: "Based on these results, what are 3 concrete actions I should take to improve my ROAS?"

How to use the chat mode:

  1. Open the “AI Insights” panel, in the top right corner of the dashboard you want to analyze.

    ai_step1

  2. The AI Insights panel will open. You can now ask your question in the chat field. Simply click the send button or “enter” when you are done.

    ai_step2

  3. You can also ask follow-up questions after that. As long as the panel is open, you will keep the same conversation. The AI will take into account everything mentioned in the current conversation to provide the best answer possible.

2. Dashboard Context

The Dashboard Context feature allows you to provide our AI with instructions for a specific dashboard. This saves you from having to repeat the same context every time you use the chat. You can also tweak and refine your dashboard context to improve the relevance of AI insights.

You'll find this setting in your AI Insights panel. Once set, the AI will always consider this information when generating any insight—preset or custom.

Common Use Cases for Dashboard Context:

  • Define Your Focus: "My most important KPI is 'Cost per Lead'. All analysis should focus on what impacts this metric."
  • Explain Your Business: "This client is a local-only business operating in New York. All analysis should ignore national trends and focus on the NY-metro area."
  • Set Reporting Rules: "My audience for this report is the CEO, who is not a marketing expert. Please ensure all insights are explained simply, with no technical jargon."
  • Define Goals: "Our main objective is to increase website conversions. Please frame all insights in relation to this goal."
  • Standardize Tone: "Always provide insights in a casual tone."

Best practices: sharing a few short examples of what you expect from the AI is always a good idea, and this is the perfect place to do so.

How to use the Dashboard Context:

  1. In the AI Insights panel, locate & click on the “setting” icon.

    ai_step4

  2. Find the “AI context” section and look for the “Dashboard context” field to enter the instructions you want to save to the dashboard.

    ai_step5

  3. Click “save changes” to save your dashboard context to your dashboard. And voilà, you are done! Repeat the same process if you want to edit your saved dashboard context.

Notes and limitations:

  • If you change your dashboard period, refresh the page, or close the AI Insights panel, it will start a new conversation when you reopen the panel.
  • Only the data present in your widgets is analyzed.
  • Current limits - subject to change: Max 50 messages per conversation, 1000 characters per message, 2000 characters for dashboard context

Data Privacy & Security

We understand that data privacy is a top priority, especially for customers operating in highly regulated environments. Here is how your data is handled when using AI Insights.

All AI Insights requests operate under Zero Data Retention (ZDR). This means:

  • Your data is never stored

  • Your data is never logged

  • Your data is never used to train any AI models

Your content remains fully private and is not retained after processing.

It’s also important to highlight that AI Insights is entirely optional. The feature only analyzes data when you explicitly choose to trigger an AI action. AI never scans or processes your account data automatically—you remain in complete control of when and how AI is used.

To power AI Insights, we use a combination of our proprietary systems and a Large Language Model (LLM). The LLM currently used is OpenAI, though we continuously evaluate other technologies to ensure the most secure, reliable, and high-performing solution for our customers.

If you have additional questions about privacy, compliance, or data handling, our team is always here to help.
