# How to track your AI traffic

## You can see how much of your website traffic comes from AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude directly from your Google Analytics 4 source.

As more people discover websites through AI assistants, knowing how much traffic these tools send you is becoming its own reporting need. There are four ways to do it, from the quickest to the most hands-on. Pick the one that fits you best.

 

### **Solution 1: Start a dashboard from the AI Referral Traffic Overview template**

The quickest way to a full AI traffic report is to create a new dashboard from the ready-made AI Referral Traffic Overview preset template. It builds a complete dashboard, already filled with the AI widgets, in a few clicks.

In your dashboard manager:

1. **Click** "+ New Dashboard"
2. **Search** for "AI Referral"
3. **Select** the "AI Referral Traffic Overview" template
4. **Set** your dashboard preferences (title, time period, language)
5. **Connect** your Google Analytics 4 source
6. **Click** Create Dashboard

### **Solution 2: Use the AI Referral Traffic Overview bundle**

A widget bundle drops a full set of related widgets onto your dashboard in one click, so you don't have to build each one yourself.  It's the easiest way to add the AI widgets to a dashboard you already have. 

1. On your dashboard, **open** the widget menu and click Widget Bundles
2. **Select** your Google Analytics 4 source
3. **Choose** the AI Referral Traffic Overview bundle and click ADD

This adds six AI widgets at once:

- **AI Sessions**: sessions from AI tools over time.
- **AI Key Events**: key events from AI traffic over time.
- **Sessions by source**: which AI tools sent the sessions.
- **AI Key Events by landing page**: where that traffic landed on your site.
- **AI Key Events Over Time**: the key-events trend.
- **AI Traffic Breakdown**: each AI source listed one by one.

Once they're on your dashboard, keep the ones you want and remove the rest.

The **AI Traffic Breakdown** widget is the one that answers "which AI tools are sending me traffic?" directly. It lists each source (chatgpt.com, perplexity, gemini.google.com, and so on) with its key events, sessions, and views.

Every widget in the bundle already comes with the AI filter applied, using the same setup described in Solution 3.

### **Solution 3: Create a widget and apply the AI filter**

If you want a specific widget instead of the whole bundle, you can build any widget and add the AI filter yourself. This is also how you extend the list to catch more tools.

1. **Create** the widget you want (any metric and dimension)
2. **Open** the widget settings and scroll down to the filters
3. **Choose** the dimension First user source / medium
4. **Set** the operator to Matches regex
5. **Copy** the text shown right below these steps (Text to paste) and paste it into the Value field
6. **Click** Add Filter, then Save

 

⚠️ The operator has to be **Matches regex**. Equals or Contains will not work with a list like this.

If you notice an AI tool that still isn't picked up, add its domain to the list following the same **.\*domain.\*** pattern.

### **Solution 4: Filter on GA4's "AI Assistant" channel**

Since May 2026, Google Analytics 4 groups traffic from recognized AI tools under a new channel called **AI Assistant**, inside the Session Default Channel Grouping dimension. Google populates it automatically, with nothing to set up on your side.

1. **Create** the widget you want (any metric and dimension)
2. **Open** the widget settings and scroll down to the filters
3. **Choose** the dimension Session Default Channel Grouping
4. **Set** the operator to Contains
5. **Enter** the value AI Assistant
6. **Click** Add Filter, then Save

This channel follows Google's own list of recognized AI tools, so it stays current on its own. Keep in mind that it's still rolling out and expanding: at launch Google only names ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude, it does not reclassify traffic from before the channel existed, and AI visits that arrive without a referrer still land in Direct.

Because of how Google builds this channel, it will almost always return a **smaller number** than Solutions 1 to 3, which all rely on the same broader filter. Google only counts the AI tools it currently recognizes, so this option is the most future-proof but also the most conservative today.

### Which solution should you pick?

- **Solution 1** is the fastest way to a complete, ready-made AI dashboard from scratch. 
- **Solution 2** is best when you already have a dashboard and want to drop in the AI widgets. 
- **Solution 3** gives you the most complete list of AI tools today and full control over a single widget. 
- **Solution 4** is the most future-proof, since Google maintains the list, but it's newer and still expanding.

### Notes and limitations

- This is **Google Analytics 4 only**.
- Solutions 1, 2, and 3 attribute traffic by **First user source / medium** (how a visitor was first acquired), while Solution 4 uses **Session Default Channel Grouping** (the channel that initiated each session), so the two approaches can return different numbers.
- Solutions 1, 2, and 3 use a list of **over 100 AI domains**, but a more marginal tool may still slip through. If that happens, you can adjust the filter to add it.
- AI traffic that arrives **without a referrer** (for example from an in-app browser or a copy-pasted link) lands in Direct and is not captured by any of these methods.
- If you built your AI dashboard from the AI Referral Traffic Overview preset template before July 30, 2026, two of its widgets may show wrong numbers. AI Key Events Over Time can show a flat zero line, and Sessions By Sources can split your sessions into an extra "(not set)" row. The template itself is corrected, so a dashboard you create now is fine. Widgets already on your dashboard are not updated automatically: recreate them from the bundle.
