[Connect Your AI Assistant](https://help.dashthis.com/mcp?hsLang=en#connect-your-ai-assistant) # How to connect with MCP in an AI Employee ## Connect an AI Employee to DashThis with MCP so it can work with your marketing data on its own. An **AI Employee** is a service you subscribe to that gives you an AI teammate for tasks in your tools. Once connected to DashThis, it can work with your data much like you do, and **it will do more as the MCP Connector gains new capabilities**. The best way to connect one is a [**service key**](https://help.dashthis.com/how-to-connect-with-mcp-using-a-service-key?hsLang=en). It doesn't work with every AI Employee service, though. For example, some services can't exchange the key for the one-hour access token the MCP Connector needs. They send the key as is, so every call is refused. In that case, or if a service key doesn't work for any other reason, use **OAuth** instead, as shown below. It signs in once, then renews its access on its own. ### Before you start - **Check that your AI Employee accepts a custom MCP server:** it needs to let you sign in with OAuth. - **Create a mailbox for it:** for example, ai-employee@yourcompany.com. Make sure it can receive email, since it becomes its own DashThis user. ### Connect your AI Employee with OAuth 1. **Invite your AI Employee as a user:** in DashThis, go to **Users Management**, then **Invite user**, and enter its mailbox. Open the invitation email and choose a password. 2. **Add a custom MCP server in your AI Employee:** enter https://mcp.dashthis.com/mcp as the URL. 3. **Choose the OAuth option that detects the sign-in on its own:** for example, **Detect automatically**. Skip any option that asks for a client ID or a client secret. 4. **Sign in with your AI Employee's user:** when the DashThis window opens. 5. **Approve access:** "Unverified" on this screen is normal. 6. **Decide if it can make changes:** check **Create and change dashboards & data** if it should. You can't add it later without connecting again. ### Check that it worked Ask your AI Employee a question about your data, like how your results did last month. If it answers with your real numbers, you're done 🎉 **Don't log in to DashThis with its user afterwards.** Logging out ends its connection too, and you'd have to redo steps 4 to 6. If you created a service key that didn't work, revoke it in your [Service Keys](https://dashthis.com/app/admin/Security/ServiceKeys). ### What your AI Employee can do Your AI Employee signs in with its own DashThis user, so through the MCP Connector it can do what a teammate with their own login can do. What it actually does is up to you: set it up for the tasks you want it to handle. With an AI Employee, who answers that question depends on how you set it up. - **Keep a human in the loop for anything that matters.** A fully autonomous AI Employee with write access can make changes that can't be undone, like removing widgets. Choose which actions need your approval, and set it up that way. - **No changes needed? Leave write access off.** Without **Create and change dashboards & data**, it can only read. - **It sees all the data in the account you connected,** since every DashThis user has the same rights. - **It can send us feedback directly,** if you set it up to.
